Save the Planet by Reusing Shredded Paper

By accident I dropped a pile of mulch on the lawn which I picked up and put into a flowering pot nearby. And it is now proving to act as an excellent barrier to stop weeds from invading it. The shredded paper also provides the same benefits as you would get from different kinds of natural wood mulch sold in the stores.

Paper is biodegradable and hence a good alternative to mulch your smaller potted garden plants.

The topping of shredded paper into pots will ensure the prevention of weeds that plague out pots during spring when the infamous sticky weed starts to overtake every area of the lawn and pots.

I will not recommend it for large lawn areas as it will look pretty tacky and will encourage the HOA to send you some kind of violation notice. But in pots and smaller beds it will be perfectly fine to do the job it is intended to do, Weed off Weeds. πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž

What AI reports about Shredded Paper as Mulch:
Shredded paper is an effective, sustainable, and free mulch that suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, and regulates temperature. Ideal for garden paths and vegetable beds, it should be applied 1–2 inches thick and lightly wetted down to prevent blowing away. Best results come from using non-glossy, black-and-white newspaper or brown packing paper to avoid toxins.

Key Benefits of Shredded Paper Mulch

Weed Suppression: A 1–2 inch layer blocks light, effectively preventing weed germination.
  • Moisture Retention: It keeps the soil cool and moist, reducing the need for frequent watering.
  • Soil Improvement:
As a carbon-rich (brown) material, it breaks down over time to add organic matter to the soil.
  • Eco-Friendly: Reuses paper waste rather than sending it to landfills.
