१९४८ साली इस्राएल राष्ट्राची स्थापना झाली. जगभरातील ज्यू लोकं इस्राएलमध्ये हळूहळू स्थलांतरित होऊ लागली. जगभरातील विविध ठिकाणांहून, स्वतःची वेगवेगळी भाषा घेऊन इस्राएलमध्ये आलेल्या या लोकांच्यात इस्राएलमध्ये राहताना एकसंधता रहावी म्हणून इस्रायलने 'हिब्रू' ही इस्राएलची राष्ट्रीय भाषा म्हणून जाहीर केली. या काळातच महाराष्ट्रातील, विशेषतः मुंबई, अलिबाग आणि कोकण परिसरातील अनेक ज्यू कुटुंबांनी सुद्धा इस्राएलमध्ये हळूहळू स्थलांतर केलं. आज त्यांच्या पुढच्या अनेक पिढ्या इस्राएलमध्ये स्थायिक आहेत. आज इस्राएलमध्ये अशा महाराष्ट्रीय वंशाच्या इस्रायली ज्यूंची संख्या तब्बल ऐंशी हजारांच्या आसपास आहे.
यांतील पहिल्या काही पिढींतील अनेकांना अजूनही मराठी बोलता, वाचता आणि लिहिता येतं. पण त्यांची मुलं आणि नातवंडं जन्मापासून इथे हिब्रू वातावरणात वाढल्यामुळे मराठीशी त्यांचा संबंध हळूहळू कमी होत गेला. घराबाहेर, शाळेत, महाविद्यालयात, कार्यालयीन कामकाजात - सर्वत्र हिब्रूच. मग मराठी वंशाच्या ज्यू धार्मिक लोकांमध्ये मराठीचं संवर्धन कसं होणार?
या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर म्हणजे 'इवा तळेगावकर' मॅडम.
इस्राएलमधील अशा महाराष्ट्रीय वंशाच्या व्यक्ती ते मराठीशी कोणताही संबंध नसलेल्या पण मराठी शिकण्यास उत्सुक असलेल्या कोणत्याही इस्रायली व्यक्तीपर्यंत सर्वांसाठी इवा मॅडम गेली अनेक वर्षे मराठी भाषा शिकवतात. हे शिक्षण ऑनलाईन वर्गांमार्फत असल्याने संपूर्ण इस्रायलमधील मराठी शिकण्यासाठी उत्सुक असलेली मंडळी इवा मॅडमकडे मराठी शिकतात. त्यामुळे त्यांना इस्राएलच्या "मराठीच्या शिक्षिका" म्हटलं तर अतिशयोक्ती ठरणार नाही.
त्यांच्या या मराठीच्या वर्गांमध्ये इवा मॅडम मराठी व्याकरण, पाठ्यपुस्तकांतील धडे, कविता, गोष्टी, गाणी शिकवतात. यांचबरोबर विद्यार्थ्यांना त्या विविध मराठी सण, परंपरा, संस्कृती यांचीही माहिती सांगतात.
मूळ कोकणातील आणि नंतर मुंबईत स्थायिक झालेल्या इवा मॅडमनी मुंबईत 'बँक ऑफ इंडिया' मध्ये नोकरी केली. बँकेत ही नोकरी करत असतानाच त्या मुंबईतील ज्यू धार्मिकांना हिब्रू भाषा आणि हिब्रू लोकनृत्य शिकवत असत. १९८८ साली त्यांचे पती श्मुएल आणि थोरला मुलगा यांच्याबरोबर त्या इस्राएलमध्ये स्थलांतरित झाल्या. इस्राएलमध्ये त्यांनी 'डिस्काउंट बँक' या इस्रायली बँकेत ३२ वर्षं नोकरी केली. सेवानिवृत्तीनंतर मात्र त्यांनी आता स्वतःला मराठी भाषेच्या सेवेसाठी वाहून घेतलं आहे.

त्यांचे हे मराठी भाषेचे वर्ग भारतीय दूतावासाच्या (इंडियन एम्बसी) सांस्कृतिक विभागाच्या अंतर्गत चालतात. विशेष म्हणजे त्या हे काम पूर्णपणे स्वयंसेवा (volunteer) म्हणून करतात. आत्तापर्यंत शंभरहून अधिक इस्रायली विद्यार्थ्यांनी त्यांच्याकडून मराठी भाषा शिकली आहे.
यासाठीची त्यांची मेहनत जवळून पाहण्याचं भाग्य मला लाभलं आहे. मराठी भाषा ही इथल्या विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी काहीशी परकी भाषा असल्यामुळे प्रत्येक धडा अधिकाधिक सोपा करून समजावून सांगणं, संपूर्ण धड्याचे हिब्रू लिपीत उच्चार आणि हिब्रूत अर्थ लिहून देणं, विद्यार्थ्यांचा मराठी शिकण्यात रस कायम राहावा म्हणून नवनवीन उपक्रम आखणं, मराठी भाषा दिनानिमित्त त्यांच्या विद्यार्थ्यांचे कार्यक्रम बसवणं - हे सगळं त्या फार मनापासून करतात आणि या सगळ्यांत त्यांचे पती श्मुएल यांचा खंबीर पाठिंबा असतो.
नुकतंच मी भारतात सुट्टीसाठी गेले असताना इवा मॅडमना सहज विचारलं, "मॅडम, भारतातून तुमच्यासाठी काय आणू?" यावर मराठमोळ्या भिडस्त स्वभावानुसारच त्या म्हणाल्या, "काही आणू नको. उलट आम्हीच इकडून तुम्ही जाताना तुमच्या घरच्यांसाठी काहीतरी खाऊ द्यायला हवा होता; पण युद्धामुळे जमलं नाही."
तरी मी पुन्हा आग्रह केल्यावर त्या म्हणाल्या, "बरं, पाचवी, सहावी, सातवीची मराठीची पाठ्यपुस्तकं आणि गोष्टींची पुस्तकं मिळाली, आणि तुमच्या बॅगेत वजनाची अडचण नसेल तर आण." भारतातून खाण्याचे पदार्थ, कपडे आणायला न सांगता मराठी शिकवण्यासाठी उपयुक्त असणारी पुस्तकं आणायला सांगणं, यातूनच मराठी शिकवण्याबद्दलचं त्यांचं प्रेम किती खोल आहे, याची जाणीव होते.
त्यांचं हे मराठीप्रेम केवळ वर्गापुरतं मर्यादित नाही. तर त्यांच्या घरीसुद्धा रोज मराठी मालिका, गाणी, मराठी चित्रपट पाहिले जातात तर रोजच्या स्वयंपाकातही मराठमोळ्या पदार्थांचा बेत असतो.
आम्ही एकदा दोन दिवस त्यांच्या घरी रहायला गेलो होतो तेव्हा त्यांनी प्रेमाने पुरणपोळी आणि कटाची आमटी केली होती. शिवाय, रात्री आम्ही सगळ्यांनी मिळून कृष्णधवल काळातील एक जुना सुंदर मराठी चित्रपट पाहिला. त्या दोन दिवसांत इस्राएलमध्ये असूनही आम्हाला महाराष्ट्राची ऊब अनुभवायला मिळाली.
अमेरिका - युरोप मध्ये राहून स्वतःची मातृभाषा जपणारे अनेक जण (विशेषतः हिंदू मराठी धार्मिक) पहायला मिळतात. पण स्वतः ज्यू धार्मिक असूनही इस्राएलमध्ये पुढच्या ज्यू धार्मिक पिढींत मराठीचं संवर्धन करण्यासाठी प्रयत्न करणाऱ्या इवा तळेगावकर मॅडम हे मला एक विशेष उदाहरण वाटतं.
अशाप्रकारे इवा मॅडमच्या हातून भविष्यात आणखी अनेक इस्रायली विद्यार्थी मराठी शिकोत, ते मराठी भाषेचा गोडवा अनुभवोत आणि महाराष्ट्राशी जुळलेला त्यांचा जुना सांस्कृतिक स्नेह अधिकाधिक दृढ होत राहो, ह्याच मनापासून शुभेच्छा.

A "Marathi teacher" in Israel
The state of Israel was established in 1948. Jewish people from all over the world started migrating to Israel gradually. In order to ensure unity among these people who came to Israel from different places around the world, bringing their own languages, Israel declared 'Hebrew' as the national language of Israel. During this period, many Jewish families from Maharashtra, especially from Mumbai, Alibaug and Konkan areas, also gradually migrated to Israel. Today, many of their next generations are settled in Israel. Today, the number of such Israeli Jews of Maharashtrian origin in Israel is around eighty thousand.
Many of the first few generations of these people can still speak, read and write Marathi. But as their children and grandchildren grew up in a Hebrew environment here from birth, their connection with Marathi gradually decreased. Outside the home, in school, in college, in office work - Hebrew is everywhere. So how will Marathi be preserved among religious Jewish people of Marathi origin?
The answer to this question is 'Eva Talegaonkar' Ma'am.
Eva Ma'am has been teaching Marathi language for many years to everyone from people of Maharashtrian origin in Israel to any Israeli who has no connection with Marathi but is eager to learn Marathi. Since this education is through online classes, people from all over Israel who are eager to learn Marathi learn Marathi from Eva Madam. Therefore, it would not be an exaggeration to call her the "Marathi teacher" of Israel.
In her Marathi classes, Eva Madam teaches Marathi grammar, lessons from textbooks, poems, stories, songs. Along with this, she also tells the students about various Marathi festivals, traditions, and culture.
Originally from Konkan and later settled in Mumbai, Eva Madam worked in the 'Bank of India' in Mumbai. While working in the bank, she used to teach Hebrew language and Hebrew folk dance to the Jewish religious people of Mumbai. In 1988, she migrated to Israel with her husband Shmuel and their eldest son. In Israel, she worked for the Israeli bank 'Discount Bank' for 32 years. After retirement, however, she has now dedicated herself to the service of the Marathi language.
Her Marathi language classes are run under the Cultural Department of the Indian Embassy. What is special is that she does this work completely as a volunteer. So far, more than a hundred Israeli students have learned Marathi from her.
I have been fortunate to see her hard work for this up close. Since Marathi is a somewhat foreign language for the students here, she explains each lesson in a simpler way, writes the pronunciation of the entire lesson in Hebrew script and the meaning in Hebrew, devises new activities to keep the students interested in learning Marathi, organizes programs for her students on the occasion of Marathi Language Day - all this she does with great heart and in all this she has the strong support of her husband Shmuel.
Recently, when I went to India for a vacation, I casually asked Eva Madam, "Ma'am, what should I bring for you from India?" To this, in keeping with her Marathi-speaking nature, she said, "Don't bring anything. On the contrary, we were supposed to give something for your family when you left here; but we couldn't because of the war."
However, when I insisted again, she said, "Well, you can bring Marathi textbooks for class 5, 6, and 7, and storybooks, only if there is no weight problem in your bag." The fact that she asked me to bring books that are useful for teaching Marathi instead of asking me to bring food and clothes from India shows how deep her love for teaching Marathi is.
Her love for Marathi is not limited to the classroom. In fact, Marathi serials, songs, and films are watched every day at her home, and Marathi dishes are also included in her daily cooking.
When we once went to stay at their house for two days, they cooked Maharashtrian Puran Poli and Katachi Amti. Moreover, at night, we all watched a beautiful old Marathi film from the black and white era together. Despite being in Israel for those two days, we got to experience the warmth of Maharashtra.
We see many people (especially Hindu Marathi religious) living in America and Europe who try to preserve Marathi. But I think Eva Talegaonkar Madam, who, despite being a Jewish herself, is trying to preserve Marathi in the next Jewish generation in Israel, is a special example.
In this way, I sincerely wish that many more Israeli students in the future learn Marathi through Eva Ma'am, experience the sweetness of the Marathi language, and that their old cultural affection for Maharashtra continues to grow stronger.
