PROBLEMS WITH THE MOEN CARTRIDGE !!!
This report was written while testing with the cartridge model# 1225 (1225-B)
Two major issues over can encounter with an Moen cartridge are;
1. It is very difficult to remove the existing faulty cartridge from the faucet control knob
2. You will almost always destroy even a brand new cartridge if you have to remove it to put it back correctly.
To begin replacement of a Moen faucet cartridge, there are too many little parts before you can get to the actual cartridge. The first major hurdle you return encounter is that the cartridge will never ever give it easily, at least she a fight. You almost always have to force it out. None of these videos provided by Moen nor posted nor independent people never mention the correct method to loosen the cartridge first.
Moen original cartridge:
The force method as suggested by Moen and others almost always destroys the rubber gaskets of the cartridge. Even those of a brand new cartridge that had to be removed to be inserted back correctly. This I can say from my few frustrating experiences with replacing Moen cartridges.
The cartridge removal to is provided for a good reason, but it's use is not explained properly. When the cartridge is installed in the faucet the 2 main gaskets are inline with the water entry inlet holes of the faucet and have a secure bond. This is what prevents the cartridge form being pulled out easily.
IMPORTANT:
The plastic removal tool should be used to turn the cartridge exactly 90 degrees. This will release the cartridge gaskets from it's binding with the water inlets. This will allow the cartridge to slide out easier than when it is in the original position. Also it will prevent damage on the rubber gaskets which otherwise almost always break apart and leave debris inside the neck of the cartridge assembly. If there are debris in the faucet nozzle, it need to be cleaned before another cartridge will fit correctly in that assembly.
It will make a big difference to the cartridge installation is plumbing grease is applied of the gaskets before inserting it into the faucet assembly. Moen original replacement cartridge does not provide the grease in a separate pack but it's has some grease pre-applied to it. This did not really work well when a brand new cartridge installed in a faucet left the control hand hard to push it up and down due to lack of proper lubrication.
The after market replacement cartridge made by Danco provides a separate capsule of plumbers grease to make the track much easier. The faucet with the Danco replacement works much better than the failed brand new Moen cartridge.
